Serving the community is a tradition that goes back to our ancestor, Sandia School for Girls, founded in the early 1930s. During the Great Depression, Ruth Hanna McCormick Simms, the faculty, and the tiny student body headed to the snowy Sandias. Everyone - including Mrs, Simms - whacked down the annual Christmas tree. This perfect speciman was ferried back to school on top of the car. Disadvantaged tykes were invited to gather around the decorated tree for carols, games, treats, and gifts.
To learn more about Prep's history and traditions, read Mrs. Liberty's book "Constant Possum," or ask Mrs. Palmer to speak to your group.
Sandia Prep continues to serve, working with children at Mission Elementary, raising funds for Make a Wish Foundation, doing yard work for disabled elderly, visiting little kids at Cuidando los Ninos, and meeting need wherever possible. This year our goal is to have every advisory help in some capacity. |
